Why Is It Famous?

Mount Agung is southeast from Mt. Batur Volcano, which is also within Bali. Bali’s most important temple, Pura Besakih, sits high on Gunung Agung’s slopes.

Geological Description

This mountain is a dominating influence on the area, as it impacts rainfall patterns and other aspects of the climate. When viewed from afar, the mountain seems perfectly conical. After climbing the peak of Mount Agung, you can see the summit of Mount Rinjani on Lombak, an island to the east.

Events in Time

Previously, an eruption was recorded in 1843. The eruption of Agung in 1963 and 1964 was among the worst seen by Indonesia, with a VEI 5 rating that sent debris 8-10 kilometers into the air. The pyroclastic flows killed between 1,100 and 1,500 people, with the cold lahars from the rainfalls killing another 200. This was followed by another eruption in May killing 200 more people.
