Bentley Mulsanne
0 Comments

The Bentley Mulsanne is one of those special kinds of luxury vehicles that disappears for a few generations before coming back with a bang. Though it seemed to find its own demise in the early 90s after a solid decade-long run, it came back with a luxurious vengeance in 2010 for those who could afford to drive one.

Connecting the Dots – a History of the Bentley Mulsanne

The true history of the Bentley Mulsanne starts back in 1980 when the car was first put into production by Bentley Motors Limited. The “Mulsanne” name was derived from the Mulsanne Straight, which is a large stretch of the Le Mans racecourse. It was made to pay homage to Bentley’s long motorsport history.

The Understated Elegance of the Bentley Mulsanne

The first thing you’ll notice on the 2019 Bentley Mulsanne is the commemorative badging that celebrates the 100th birthday of Bentley Motors. In terms of power and handling, it comes complete with a twin-turbocharged 6.75L V-8 engine that sports 505 horsepower. It utilizes rear-wheel-drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission.

In terms of top features, the car comes complete with an 8.0-inch infotainment system, a 14-speaker base audio system, optional rear-seat entertainment displays, and a variety of driver assistance features.

The Evolution of the Bentley Mulsanne

  • First Generation Bentley Mulsanne (1980-1992)

The first-generation Mulsanne used the same 6.75L V-8 engine as Rolls-Royce and came with two SU carburetors. By 1986, the carburetors were replaced with Bosch Fuel Injection. The cars at this time used three-speed automatic transmission.

In 1985, the company released a Mulsanne Turbo edition that gave the car a 50% increase in overall power. By 1987, the Mulsanne S rolled around with firmer suspension and alloy wheels. The model died in 1992.

  • Second Generation Bentley Mulsanne (2010-Present)

The second-generation Mulsanne came around in 2010 with a rounder, more modern style, and a 6.75L twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. The car has 505 horsepower and 1020 Nm of torque. By the time 2016 rolled around, the car received some front-end style upgrades, redesigned seating, a new infotainment system, and glass switchgear.
