BMW 5-Series
0 Comments

If you think luxury runs deep in other car brands, you probably haven’t spent much time looking into the BMW 5-Series. For decades, the BMW 5-Series has been establishing itself as one of the best-handling and highest-performance sedans on the market. What used to be a small cruiser for driving up and down the boulevard on a Sunday has now turned into an efficient and performance-driven machine.

From the Depths of History – The BMW 5-Series

The BMW 5-Series has been in production since 1972. It came directly after the New Class Sedans that were available up until the early 1970s and was made to fill the void in the lineup for an “executive car”. At first, the 5-Series was only available in a sedan style, though the wagon and five-door fastback were eventually added to the lineup.

The Next Level of Sophistication – An Overview of the BMW 5-Series

The 2019 BMW 5-Series is powered by a four-cylinder engine in the 530i and a six-cylinder engine in the 540i. Each of these engines is perfectly paired with an intuitive eight-speed automatic transmission. There is also a 530e plug-in model that uses a 2.0L four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor.

On the inside lies a variety of luxury features, including 20-way adjustable multi-contour seats in the front, a massive 10.2” infotainment screen with a high-resolution design, BMW hand gesture control, and an array of safety features, including automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control.

The Evolution of the BMW 5-Series

  • First Generation BMW 5-Series (1972-1981)

The first-generation 5-Series was released in 1972 on the E12 platform and came with an entry-level 1.8L or 2.0L engine. Some very minor development occurred over time.

  • Second Generation BMW 5-Series (1981-1986)

In 1981, the 5-Series received a new front grille, hood, taillights, seats, and steering wheel. Power windows were new as well.

  • Third Generation BMW 5-Series (1988-1996)

By the third generation, the E34 platform held the car together, allowing for a much stiffer chassis and improved driver safety.

  • Fourth Generation BMW 5-Series (1995-2003)

By 1995, the E39 platform was used, and the cars were made with improved aluminum suspension, anti-lock brakes, air conditioning, and power steering.

  • Fifth Generation BMW 5-Series (2003-2010)

The fifth-generation 5-Series received new headlights, a new bumper, and a completely revised interior. The 530i engine replaced the 528i. By the end of 2010, a variety of modern safety features became standard, and the iDrive system was greatly improved.

  • Sixth Generation BMW 5-Series (2010-2016)

The sixth-generation 5-Series sat on a new platform with a sharper front fascia. The exhaust tips were restyled, as well as the light clusters.

  • Seventh Generation BMW 5-Series (2017-Present)

By 2017, the car became more striking and aggressive than ever before, and a variety of top-notch safety features and connectivity became standard.

The BMW 5-Series In the News

In recent BMW news, the 5-Series models can now apparently be fitted with an illuminated kidney-style grille that you can purchase from BMW.
