BMW 6-Series
0 Comments

No BMW Series has had its ups and downs quite like the 6-Series has. From the two-door coupe models that graced the streets in the ‘70s and ‘80s, to the eventual demise of the model, to the triumphant return in the early 2000s, the BMW 6-Series has seen it all.

A Bumpy History of the BMW 6-Series

The BMW 6-Series came about in 1976 when BMW wanted to create a series of grand tourers to be the successors to the E9 Coupe. From 1976 to 1989, the only 6-Series that was available was in the form of a two-door coupe. After that, the BMW 8-Series took over, leaving it in the dust. It was until 2004 that the nameplate was revived for a second generation.

Luxurious Performance of the BMW 6-Series

The 2019 BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe comes equipped with a 3.0L inline-six engine that puts out 315 horsepower at the base model. Of course, there is an upgraded version with a 4.4L V-8 engine that puts out 445 horsepower. Each of these comes with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear or all-wheel-drive.

Some of the standard inside features include automated headlamps and wipers, two-zone climate control, wireless charging stations, a 10.2” touchscreen system, rolling Wi-Fi, and a nine-speaker audio system.

A Timeline of the BMW 6-Series

  • First Generation BMW 6-Series (1976-1989)

The first-generation 6-Series came in a two-door coupe body style. For most of the markets, the cars were powered by the M88 straight-six engine.

  • Second Generation BMW 6-Series (2003-2010)

By 2003, the 6-Series came back on the market. The body styles ranged from coupe to convertible. They utilized a smaller E60 5-Series chassis with many of the same features, as well as the BMW iDrive system. The M6 was released in 2005.

  • Third Generation BMW 6-Series (2011-2017)

The third-generation 6-Series was released in 2011 with two-door convertible and four-door coupe body styles. It received a facelift in 2015 alongside a few fuel economy upgrades. The cars were powered by an S63 twin-turbo V-8 engine.

  • Fourth Generation BMW 6-Series (2017-2019)

The fourth-generation 6-Series hit the market as the “Gran Turismo”, using a range of engines from the four-cylinder gasoline engine to the six-cylinder diesel engine.

The BMW 6-Series In the News

It is a sad day today in BMW news, as many BMW cars have just hit the chopping block, including the BMW 3-Series GT, the BMW 6-Series GT, and the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe.

The BMW 6-Series – Resurrected From the Dead

It was a sad day when we saw the demise of the BMW 6-Series back in the 1980s, and it seems like it is now happening again. Whether or not it is time to leave the model at peace, we’re not sure. What we are sure of is that it had an incredible run, and we can only look forward to what BMW has to offer in the future.
