With the smog that is filling our planet to the brim, there is no better vehicle to provide a moment of clarity than this Hybrid Honda.

The Honda Clarity is one of the top hybrid models in the Honda line and is powered by electricity, gasoline, or hydrogen, with a few all-electric models around as well. The beauty with the Clarity is that it delivers everything you would expect from an electric vehicle without compromising any of the things that we love so much about standard automobiles. It may just be what the future of the automotive industry needs.

The Realization of the Honda Clarity

The Honda Clarity got its name from a hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle that was known as the Honda FCX Clarity. It was based on a 2006 Honda FCX Concept car. By 2008, the car had begun coming off of production lines in Japan, Europe, and the United States.

The Clean Technology and Performance of the Honda Clarity

The 2019 Honda Clarity is a plug-in hybrid model that is powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder engine that puts out 212 horsepower. It gives the car a 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds. The car can provide 48 miles of uninterrupted electric driving. There is also an all-electric variant of the car that delivers an 89-mile driving range with 161 horsepower, as well as a hydrogen-powered version that uses a 174-horsepower motor and has 366 miles of range.

The interior matches just about every modern Honda in the lineup with a touchscreen infotainment system that utilizes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities. There is also keyless passive entry and heated front seats for the luxurious drivers. In terms of driver-assistance features, the Clarity includes automated emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist.

Two Generations of the Honda Clarity

  • First Generation Honda Clarity (2008-2014)

The first-generation Honda Clarity utilized electrical power that came from a 100kW Honda Vertical Flow hydrogen fuel-cell stack with an electrical motor rated at 134 horsepower. The vehicle was estimated to get around 77 mpk of hydrogen in the city. It was made with a high-quality dashboard display for monitoring efficiency, as well as an array of standard features, including iPhone/iPod integration, a voice-activated GPS system, and Bluetooth.

  • Second Generation Honda Clarity (2016-Present)

The second-generation Clarity came about in 2016 as a new fuel-cell model. It became available in 12 different dealerships around the United States west coast. The Clarity Fuel-Cell model has a range of 366 miles, which is the best EPA driving range out of all the zero-emissions cars in the United States. That was until the Tesla S got an upgrade in 2019.

Celebrity Endorsements of the Honda Clarity

Though it may not seem like your standard celebrity car, you can see Jamie Lee Curtis cruising around in her Honda Clarity! Jay Leno can also be seen taking a new Honda Clarity for a drive.

The Honda Clarity In the News

In recent news, a few Honda Clarity owners were left completely stranded after a hydrogen facility explosion in their fuel-cell vehicle. Honda is currently working on a resolution for future problems in the same vein.
