With the MDX covering the luxurious part of the Acura lineup, there was a sportier spot left open. Acura decided to fill that void with the RDX, an engaging and charismatic compact crossover with a striking body design and a dynamic feel.

A Bite-Sized History of the Acura RDX

The Acura RDX came out of the need for a compact crossover, as the MDX was already fulfilling the crossover status. As the MDX increased in price over the years, people weren’t able to afford it. In 2007, Acura decided to release the RDX to compensate for their losses.

Technology and Innovations of the Acura RDX

The 2020 Acura RDX is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out 272 horsepower. The engine is paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission and can either be used with front or all-wheel-drive. The top-spec version of the car has a 0-60 time of 6.6 seconds.

On the inside, there are a couple notable features, including the rotary drive-mode selector, heated and power-adjustable front seats, dual-zone climate control, a 10.2” touchscreen infotainment system, and a 4G LTE mobile hotspot.

A Generational Timeline of the Acura RDX

  • First Generation Acura RDX (2007-2012)

The first-generation RDX was built on a global light truck platform and utilized a 2.3L DOHC in-line four-cylinder VTEC engine. Some of the top features included standard five-speed automatic transmission, the Vehicle Stability Assist system, and a multi-information display.

  • Second Generation Acura RDX (2013-2018)

The previous engine from the first generation was replaced by a 3.5L V-6 engine and was paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Some of the top features on the second-generation RDX included the 5” infotainment system, keyless entry, rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. By 2015, the SUV received a few more upgrades, including the dual-screen On-Demand display, blind spot information, and eight-way adjustable power seats.

  • Third Generation Acura RDX (2019-Present)

The third-generation Acura RDX has an upgraded 2.0L DOHC VTEC engine with 272 horsepower. It has the best handling and most luxurious cabin of any prior RDX model.
