The History of the BMW M2

The BMW 2-Series vehicles came into production in late 2013, providing car buyers with a top-tier series of coupes and convertibles. The M2 debuted in October of 2015 as a successor to the 1-Series M Coupe. It was meant to follow the sporty coupe design that was growing in popularity at the time and still is. 

The M2 was built with an ultra-powerful N55 turbocharged straight-six engine, while the later-built M2 Competition model utilized an S55.

BMW M2 Interior

The M2 comes complete with either a 6-speed manual transmission or 7-speed DCT automatic transmission, with 0-60 times of 4.5 seconds and 4.3 seconds respectively. The turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six engine provides drivers with 365 hp and 500 lb-ft torque with the overboost function engaged. 

It comes complete with four standard seats and a leather interior. You’ll find all of the technology specs that you’d expect from a modern luxury car as well, including a premium sound and infotainment system, keyless entry, and Bluetooth connection.

A Timeline of M2 Models

  • BMW M2 Coupe – First Generation (2015-2018)

The BMW M2 was first debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2016. Coupe was the first iteration of the 2-Series BMWs, complete with a turbocharged 3.0L engine, 369 lb-ft of maximum torque, and a luxury coupe-style body.

  • BMW M2 Competition – Second Generation (2018-Present)

The M2 Competition was meant as a replacement for the first generation M2. The engine was upgraded from an N55 to a S55 single-scroll, twin-turbocharged engine. The M2 Competition saw an overall increase in power and torque specs, as well as acceleration time. Some of the major exterior changes included the upgraded brake discs, Y-spoke alloy wheels, electronic flap control, and adaptive headlamps, among other things. 

BMW M2 In The News

BMW have just announced that they have a new M2 Competition in the works to replace the BMW M240i racing model. The car is still in the developmental stages, though is set to be unveiled next year.

BMW found that it was fitting to release their M2 with Gigi Hadid, one of the world’s most renowned models, behind the wheel. She was the star of many of their original marketing campaigns and is now the face of BMW, owning one of these cars herself.
