A Look Back at the Honda CBR1100XX Beginnings

Honda had a plan in the mid-1990s. That plan was to try and build the world’s fastest production motorcycle, a title that belonged to the Kawasaki Ninja ZX11 at the time. It was then that Honda created the CBR1100XX Super Blackbird in 1996. The name paid homage to the Lockheed SR-71, which was the fastest production aircraft in the world at the time.

The last iteration of the CBR1100X came around in 2005, though production continued in Europe until 2007. It weighed 223kg, making it a bit heavier than modern sportbikes. It utilized an in-line four engine with a pretty conventional layout overall. That layout included a 1137cc powerplant liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve transverse four. The twin balance shafts helped to provide a smooth ride.

By 2001, a new dashboard was added with a digital speedometer, and by 2005, there was a new EDI mapping that helped the bike comply with emission standards. Unfortunately, that lowered the power from 164 horsepower to 150.
