From the tops of the mountains to the warm, sandy beaches, the Toyota Forerunner is one of the top SUVs in the world. Designed to be rugged and powerful whilst more comfortable than its Land Cruiser brother, it embodies the idea of a versatile vehicle. With five generations under its belt and a load of improvements over the years, we’d be hard-pressed to find a more iconic SUV.

A Short History of the Toyota Forerunner

The Toyota Forerunner was first introduced back in 1984. It was made as a Toyota Trekker and Toyota Hilux modification to start. In 1981, Toyota released the Toyota Trekker, which was a prototype of sorts. It spawned the idea for the Forerunner after it slowly went out of production in 1983.

The Vehicle of the Wild – Technology and Innovations of the Toyota Forerunner

The 2019 Forerunner runs on a 4.0L V-6 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. It is capable of running in rear-wheel, four-wheel, and all-wheel-drive. It sits on top of Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which provides drivers with better suspension and stability on less stable terrain. Some of the top features include a power sunroof, a sliding rear cargo deck, and a touchscreen infotainment system.

Decades of the Toyota Forerunner

  • First Generation Toyota Forerunner (1984-1989)

The first-generation Forerunner was a two-door, four-wheel-drive SUV with a removable fiberglass shell that was placed over the rear. It utilized a 2.4L inline-four-cylinder engine. By 1988, the Forerunner had an optional 3.0L V-6 engine to choose from.

  • Second Generation Toyota Forerunner (1989-1995)

Toyota equipped the second-generation Forerunner with four doors and used a full metal shell instead of the removable fiberglass one. Leather became optional in 1992, and the eight-speaker CD audio system and anti-lock brakes became available by 1994.

  • Third Generation Toyota Forerunner (1995-2002)

The third-generation Forerunner was a bit larger with a 3.4L V-6 engine. By the early 2000s, the vehicle was equipped with an array of handling features, including Active Traction Control, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, and Skid Control.

  • Fourth Generation Toyota Forerunner (2003-2009)

The fourth-generation Forerunner was based on the LC Prado 120 Platform with a larger body. The  V-6 engine used a four-speed automatic transmission and featured shift-on-the-fly four-wheel-drive.

  • Fifth Generation Toyota Forerunner (2010-Present)

The fifth-generation Forerunner was the biggest of all with a brand new 4.0L V-6 engine. The limited editions and the SR5 came complete with a third-row seat.
